That which is given in charity with a hope of receiving in return some benefit, be it in any form — perhaps at a different time and place — is of the “passionate type.” And also, a charity that is done reluctantly, not conscientiously, is of the same Rajasic type. In our everyday worldly activities, many of our gifts fall under this category.

THE DULL TYPE OF CHARITY IS BEING DESCRIBED NOW:

Tu, but; the danam, gift; yat, which; diyate, is made; prati-upakara-artham, expecting reciprocation-with this purpose in view: ‘In time, he will render service in return’-; va punah, or again; uddisya, with a desire for; its phalam, result-that, ‘To me will accrue some unseen reward of this gift’-; and which is diyate, given; pariklistam, grudgingly, with reluctance; tat, that; is smrtam, considered to be; rajasam, born of rajas.
