Oh Lord! Whatever sins I have committed in all my lives (including previous births), please destroy them all with every step I take around you.

Description

This Shlokam is typically chanted at the end of a Puja, where one asks the lord for forgiveness for the sins that he/she has committed in this janma (birth) and all my previous janmas, by either circumambulating a deity or self-circumambulating clockwise 3 times, with hands folded in prayer position. Most importantly the mind needs to be focused on the intent of this prayer. Simply chanting the Shlokam and moving the body clockwise will have little effect. We are asking the Supreme Power, the Almighty Lord who created the universe including us, to forgive us for our sins. Therefore, this mantra must be chanted with humility, with genuine remorse, as a sincere prayer to the almighty Lord. It will have tremendous effect then.

yani kani ca–whatsoever and all;
papani–sins;
Janmantara – this birth and earlier births;
kritani – done (by me);
ca–also,
tani tani–all of them;
vinashyanti — are destroyed;
pradaksinam— (by) the self-circumambulation;
pade pade–at every step;

An alternate Shlokam
If you are not in a position to perform the self-circumambulation a good alternative is the shlokam Karacharana Kritam Vaa. The meaning of this Shlokam is:
O Compassionate Mahadeva! O Sambhu! Victory to Thee! Please do forgive all the errors committed by me with the hands, legs, speech, body, through actions, through the ears, eyes, mind or by not doing ordained actions or by doing prohibited actions.

This Shlokam is typically chanted at the end of the day before going to sleep, but truly can be chanted at any time and place. Especially immediately after you feel the guilt of having committed a wrong act, or even a wrong thought. Once again the effect of all these shlokams are realized only by the sincerity and mindset with which we pray and not a mechanical repetition of sounds.
