Neither does the sun shine there, nor the moon with all the stars, nor does this lightning shine. What to say of this fire? Everything shines after him who alone shines. By His light all this shines variously.

Description

Excerpt from the book ‘Prayer Guide’ by Swami Dayananda Saraswati
Tatra, there, na suryo bhati, the sun does not shine, and na candra-tarakam, where the moon does not shine with all the stars.

Na imah vidyutah bhanti, where even the boastful lightning flashes do not enter. Kutoyam agnih, what to talk of the fire that I am showing you? The sun is bright because my eyes are capable of sight. If my eyes do not see, they are not bright any more. The sun illumines, but my eyes illumine the sun too. My eyes illumine because my mind illumines the eyes. My mind is shining because of the self, atman, which lights up everything. This self lights up my mind, my senses and the whole world. That light is self-effulgent. It is in the form of caitanya, consciousness. What is the source of the atman?

It does not need borrowed light; it is self-effulgent. Such is his svarupa. Tatra suryah na bhati, surya does not illuminate the self, without whom surya himself would not shine. The Lord is not the object of any illumination. It is he who illumines everything.

When I show arati, I want to light up the light of all lights with this camphor light. It is like holding a candle in front of the sun to illumine it! He is the light of all lights because of which the mind thinks, my eyes see, my ears hear, and the sense of smell, taste and touch, all perform their functions. I want to light up that light with this light. Kutah agnih, what is this flame of lamp going to do? Yet I am lighting it because it symbolises the light of knowledge. In ignorance, everything is hidden. The light of knowledge dispels that darkness of ignorance.

Tameva bhantam anubhati sarvam-anubhati means shines after; that alone shines in which everything shines after.

Tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati, it is because of his light alone that everything, including the mind and the senses, shines.
