Sri Rudram Namakam Introduction

The Namakam portion of the Sri Rudram, also known as the Rudra Prashna, is a profound and intricate Vedic hymn found in the Krishna Yajurveda, specifically within the Taittiriya Samhita (Book 4, Chapter 5). The term Namakam is derived from the frequent repetition of the word “namaḥ,” meaning “salutation” or “obeisance,” which is a recurring element throughout the hymn. The Namakam consists of eleven anuvakas (sections), each addressing different aspects of Lord Rudra, who is venerated as a form of Shiva in his fierce, yet deeply compassionate, aspect. It emphasizes the dual nature of the divine, invoking Rudra’s power to both destroy and heal.

Ganapathi Prarthana
॥ अथ श्रीरुद्रप्रश्नः ॥
श्री गुरुभ्यॊ नमः । हरिः ऒ३म् ।
ऒं गणानां त्वा गणपतिꣳ हवामहॆ कविं कवीनामुपमश्रवस्तमम् ।
ज्यॆष्ठराजं ब्रह्मणां ब्रह्मणस्पत आ नः श्ड़्ण्वन्नूतिभिस्सीद सादनम् ॥

śrī gurubhyo namaḥ . hariḥ o3m .
oṃ gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapatigͫ havāmahe kaviṃ kavīnāmupamaśravastamam .

॥ ऒं नमॊ भगवतॆ रुद्राय ॥

नमस्तॆ रुद्रमन्यव उतॊत इषवॆ नमः ।
नमस्तॆ अस्तु धन्वनॆ बाहुभ्यामुत तॆ नमः ।
namaste rudramanyava utota iṣave namaḥ .
namaste astu dhanvane bāhubhyāmuta te namaḥ .

यात इषुः शिवतमा शिवं बभूव तॆ धनुः ।
शिवा शरव्या या तव तया नॊ रुद्र म्ड़्डय ।
yāta iṣuḥ śivatamā śivaṃ babhūva te dhanuḥ .
śivā śaravyā yā tava tayā no rudra mṛḍaya .

या तॆ रुद्र शिवा तनूरघॊरा’पापकाशिनी ।
तया नस्तनुवा शन्तमया गिरिशंताभिचाकशीहि ।
yā te rudra śivā tanūraghorā’pāpakāśinī .
tayā nastanuvā śantamayā giriśaṃtābhicākaśīhi .

यामिषुं गिरिशंत हस्तॆ बिभर्ष्यस्तवॆ ।
शिवां गिरित्र तां कुरु मा हिꣳसीः पुरुषं जगत् ।
yāmiṣuṃ giriśaṃta haste bibharṣyastave .
śivāṃ giritra tāṃ kuru mā higͫsīḥ puruṣaṃ jagat .

शिवॆन वचसा त्वा गिरिशाच्छा वदामसि ।
यथा नः सर्वमिज्जगदयक्ष्मसुमना असत् ।
śivena vacasā tvā giriśācchā vadāmasi .
yathā naḥ sarvamijjagadayakṣmasumanā asat .

अध्यवॊचदधि वक्ता प्रथमॊ दैव्यॊ भिषक् ।
अहीश्च सर्वाञ्जम्भयन्त्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्यः ।
adhyavocadadhi vaktā prathamo daivyo bhiṣak .
ahīśca sarvāñjambhayantsarvāśca yātudhānyaḥ .

असौ यस्ताम्रॊ अरुण उत बभ्रुः सुमंगलः ।
यॆ चॆमारुद्रा अभितॊ दिक्षु ।
श्रिताः सहस्रशॊ’वैषाहॆड ईमहॆ ।
asau yastāmro aruṇa uta babhruḥ sumaṃgalaḥ .
ye cemārudrā abhito dikṣu .
śritāḥ sahasraśo’vaiṣāheḍa īmahe .

असौ यॊ’वसर्पति नीलग्रीवॊ विलॊहितः ।
उतैनं गॊपा अद्ड़्शन्नद्ड़्शन्नुदहार्यः ।
उतैनं विश्वा भूतानि स द्ड़्ष्टॊ म्ड़्डयाति नः ।
asau yo’vasarpati nīlagrīvo vilohitaḥ .
utainaṃ gopā adṛśannadṛśannudahāryaḥ .
utainaṃ viśvā bhūtāni sa dṛṣṭo mṛḍayāti naḥ .

नमॊ अस्तु नीलग्रीवाय सहस्राक्षाय मीढुषॆ ।
अथॊ यॆ अस्य सत्वानॊ’हं तॆभ्यॊ’करन्नमः ।
namo astu nīlagrīvāya sahasrākṣāya mīḍhuṣe .
atho ye asya satvāno’haṃ tebhyo’karannamaḥ .

प्रमुंच धन्वनस्त्वमुभयॊरार्त्नियॊर्ज्याम् ।
याश्च तॆ हस्त इषवः परा ता भगवॊ वप ।
pramuṃca dhanvanastvamubhayorārtniyorjyām .
yāśca te hasta iṣavaḥ parā tā bhagavo vapa .

अवतत्य धनुस्त्व सहस्राक्ष शतॆषुधॆ ।
निशीर्य शल्यानां मुखा शिवॊ नः सुमना भव ।
avatatya dhanustva sahasrākṣa śateṣudhe .
niśīrya śalyānāṃ mukhā śivo naḥ sumanā bhava .

विज्यं धनुः कपर्दिनॊ विशल्यॊ बाणवा उत ।
अनॆशन्नस्यॆषव आभुरस्य निषंगथिः ।
vijyaṃ dhanuḥ kapardino viśalyo bāṇavā uta .
aneśannasyeṣava ābhurasya niṣaṃgathiḥ .

या तॆ हॆतिर्मीढुष्टम हस्तॆ बभूव तॆ धनुः ।
तया’स्मान्विश्वतस्त्वमयक्ष्मया परिब्भुज ।
yā te hetirmīḍhuṣṭama haste babhūva te dhanuḥ .
tayā’smānviśvatastvamayakṣmayā paribbhuja .

नमस्तॆ अस्त्वायुधायानातताय ध्ड़्ष्णवॆ ।
उभाभ्यामुत तॆ नमॊ बाहुभ्यां तव धन्वनॆ ।
namaste astvāyudhāyānātatāya dhṛṣṇave .
ubhābhyāmuta te namo bāhubhyāṃ tava dhanvane .

परि तॆ धन्वनॊ हॆतिरस्मान्व्रुणक्तु विश्वतः ।
अथॊ य इषुधिस्तवारॆ अस्मन्निधॆहि तम् ॥१॥
pari te dhanvano hetirasmānvruṇaktu viśvataḥ .
atho ya iṣudhistavāre asmannidhehi tam ..1..

श्री शम्भ॑वे̠ नमः॑ ।
नमस्तॆ अस्तु भगवन् विश्वॆश्वराय महादॆवाय त्र्यम्बकाय
त्रिपुरान्तकाय त्रिकाग्निकालाय कालाग्निरुद्राय वर् त्रिकालाग्नि

सदाशिवाय श्रीमन्महादॆवाय नमः ।

Sri Rudram – Namakam

The Namakam portion of the Sri Rudram, also known as the Rudra Prashna, is a profound and intricate Vedic hymn found in the Krishna Yajurveda, specifically within the Taittiriya Samhita (Book 4, Chapter 5). The term Namakam is derived from the frequent repetition of the word “namaḥ,” meaning “salutation” or “obeisance,” which is a recurring element throughout the hymn. The Namakam consists of eleven anuvakas (sections), each addressing different aspects of Lord Rudra, who is venerated as a form of Shiva in his fierce, yet deeply compassionate, aspect.

Namakam comes from the Sanskrit root word “Namah” (नमः), meaning “salutations” or “I bow.” The Namakam section is characterized by its repeated use of “Namah” or “Namo” as it offers salutations to Lord Rudra (Shiva)

The hymn offers a multitude of salutations to Rudra in his various forms—recognizing him not only as the god of destruction but also as a healer, protector, and the one who sustains life. Each section addresses Rudra’s presence in all layers of existence, acknowledging his omnipresence in nature, inanimate objects, animals, humans, and even in unseen forces like the wind and rain.
