Sri Garuda spoke:
Now I shall describe the meditation (dhyānam), listen attentively, O beautiful one. This meditation on Lord Hanuman was created by the God of gods (Lord Shiva) himself and is very dear to Hanuman.

पञ्चवक्त्रं महाभीमं त्रिपञ्चनयनैर्युतम् ।
बाहुभिर्दशभिर्युक्तं सर्वकामार्थसिद्धिदम् ॥ २॥
pañcavaktraṃ mahābhīmaṃ tripañcanayanairyutam .
bāhubhirdaśabhiryuktaṃ sarvakāmārthasiddhidam .. 2..

I meditate upon the five-faced, extremely formidable Lord Hanuman, adorned with fifteen eyes (three eyes on each of the five faces), endowed with ten arms, who grants the fulfillment of all desires and goals.

This verse describes the iconographic form of Pancha Mukha (five-faced) Hanuman, highlighting his powerful and divine attributes: five faces, fifteen eyes (three on each face, representing the trinity), and ten arms symbolizing his immense power. पूर्वं तु वानरं वक्त्रं कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभम् ।
दन्ष्ट्राकरालवदनं भृकुटीकुटिलेक्षणम् ॥ ३॥
pūrvaṃ tu vānaraṃ vaktraṃ koṭisūryasamaprabham .
danṣṭrākarālavadanaṃ bhṛkuṭīkuṭilekṣaṇam .. 3..
The eastern face is that of a monkey, with the radiance of ten million suns, with fearsome fangs in its mouth, and with eyes made fierce by furrowed brows.

अस्यैव दक्षिणं वक्त्रं नारसिंहं महाद्भुतम् ।
अत्युग्रतेजोवपुषं भीषणं भयनाशनम् ॥ ४॥
asyaiva dakṣiṇaṃ vaktraṃ nārasiṃhaṃ mahādbhutam .
atyugratejovapuṣaṃ bhīṣaṇaṃ bhayanāśanam .. 4..
The southern face is that of Narasimha (the man-lion incarnation), most wonderful, with an extremely fierce and radiant form, terrifying, yet a destroyer of fear.

पश्चिमं गारुडं वक्त्रं वक्रतुण्डं महाबलम् ॥
सर्वनागप्रशमनं विषभूतादिकृन्तनम् ॥ ५॥
paścimaṃ gāruḍaṃ vaktraṃ vakratuṇḍaṃ mahābalam ..
sarvanāgapraśamanaṃ viṣabhūtādikṛntanam .. 5..
The western face is that of Garuda (the divine eagle), with a curved beak and great strength, capable of subduing all serpents and destroying poison, spirits, and similar harmful entities.

उत्तरं सौकरं वक्त्रं कृष्णं दीप्तं नभोपमम् ।
पातालसिंहवेतालज्वररोगादिकृन्तनम् ॥ ६॥
uttaraṃ saukaraṃ vaktraṃ kṛṣṇaṃ dīptaṃ nabhopamam .
pātālasiṃhavetālajvararogādikṛntanam .. 6..
The northern face is that of a boar (Varaha), dark and luminous like the sky, capable of destroying demons from the netherworld, vampiric spirits, fevers, diseases, and similar afflictions.

ऊर्ध्वं हयाननं घोरं दानवान्तकरं परम् ।
येन वक्त्रेण विप्रेन्द्र तारकाख्यं महासुरम् ॥ ७॥
ūrdhvaṃ hayānanaṃ ghoraṃ dānavāntakaraṃ param .
yena vaktreṇa viprendra tārakākhyaṃ mahāsuram .. 7..
The upward-facing face is that of a horse (Hayagriva), fierce and supreme, destroyer of demons. O best among the Brahmins, it was with this face that the great demon known as Taraka was [destroyed].

जघान शरणं तत्स्यात्सर्वशत्रुहरं परम् ।
ध्यात्वा पञ्चमुखं रुद्रं हनुमन्तं दयानिधिम् ॥ ८॥
jaghāna śaraṇaṃ tatsyātsarvaśatruharaṃ param .
dhyātvā pañcamukhaṃ rudraṃ hanumantaṃ dayānidhim .. 8..
He slew [the demon]. Taking refuge in that [form] destroys all enemies supremely. By meditating upon the five-faced wrathful Hanuman, who is an ocean of compassion…

खड्गं त्रिशूलं खट्वाङ्गं पाशमङ्कुशपर्वतम् ।
मुष्टिं कौमोदकीं वृक्षं धारयन्तं कमण्डलुम् ॥ ९॥
khaḍgaṃ triśūlaṃ khaṭvāṅgaṃ pāśamaṅkuśaparvatam .
muṣṭiṃ kaumodakīṃ vṛkṣaṃ dhārayantaṃ kamaṇḍalum .. 9..
Wielding a sword, trident, club, noose, goad, mountain, fist, mace (Kaumodaki), tree, and holding a water pot (Kamandalu).

भिन्दिपालं ज्ञानमुद्रां दशभिर्मुनिपुङ्गवम् ।
एतान्यायुधजालानि धारयन्तं भजाम्यहम् ॥ १०॥
bhindipālaṃ jñānamudrāṃ daśabhirmunipuṅgavam .
etānyāyudhajālāni dhārayantaṃ bhajāmyaham .. 10..
Holding a sling weapon (bhindipala) and the knowledge mudra (gesture) in his ten hands, [he is] the foremost among sages. I worship him who holds all these arrays of weapons.

प्रेतासनोपविष्टं तं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ।
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम् ॥ ११॥
pretāsanopaviṣṭaṃ taṃ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitam .
divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ divyagandhānulepanam .. 11..
I worship him who is seated on a corpse (or spirit), adorned with all kinds of ornaments, wearing divine garlands and clothes, and anointed with divine fragrances.

सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवं हनुमद्विश्वतोमुखम् ।
पञ्चास्यमच्युतमनेकविचित्रवर्णवक्त्रं
शशाङ्कशिखरं कपिराजवर्यम ।
पीताम्बरादिमुकुटैरूपशोभिताङ्गं
पिङ्गाक्षमाद्यमनिशं मनसा स्मरामि ॥ १२॥
sarvāścaryamayaṃ devaṃ hanumadviśvatomukham .
pañcāsyamacyutamanekavicitravarṇavaktraṃ
śaśāṅkaśikharaṃ kapirājavaryama .
pītāmbarādimukuṭairūpaśobhitāṅgaṃ
piṅgākṣamādyamaniśaṃ manasā smarāmi .. 12..

I constantly remember in my mind the wonder-filled deity Hanuman, whose face is turned in all directions, with five mouths, imperishable, with many wonderfully colored faces, crowned with the moon, the best among monkey kings. His body is adorned with yellow garments and a crown, with tawny eyes, the primordial one.

This verse is a comprehensive meditation on Pancha Mukha Hanuman, describing his all-pervading nature (faces in all directions), his imperishable divine status, his varied and colorful faces, his lunar crown, his status as king of monkeys, his regal adornments, and his distinctive tawny eyes. The devotee commits to constantly remembering this form.


मर्कटेशं महोत्साहं सर्वशत्रुहरं परम् ।
शत्रु संहर मां रक्ष श्रीमन्नापदमुद्धर ॥ १३॥
markaṭeśaṃ mahotsāhaṃ sarvaśatruharaṃ param .
śatru saṃhara māṃ rakṣa śrīmannāpadamuddhara .. 13..
Lord of monkeys, of great enthusiasm, supreme destroyer of all enemies – destroy my enemies, protect me, O glorious one, deliver me from dangers.

ॐ हरिमर्कट मर्कट मन्त्रमिदं
परिलिख्यति लिख्यति वामतले ।
यदि नश्यति नश्यति शत्रुकुलं
यदि मुञ्चति मुञ्चति वामलता ॥ १४॥
oṃ harimarkaṭa markaṭa mantramidaṃ
parilikhyati likhyati vāmatale .
yadi naśyati naśyati śatrukulaṃ
yadi muñcati muñcati vāmalatā .. 14..
Om Hari Markata Markata. (Markata means ‘monkey’ – referring to Hanuman). Whoever writes this mantra on their left palm – if the enemy clan is to be destroyed, it will surely be destroyed; if the left creeper (or bondage) is to be released, it will surely be released.

I bow to him who has the faces of a monkey, man-lion (Narasimha), king of birds (Garuda), boar, and horse; who is adorned with divine ornaments; who has fifteen eyes (three on each of five faces); who shines with radiant splendor; whose lotus hands hold a sword, shield, book, nectar pot, goad, mountain, plough, club, serpent, and tree; who has ten arms; and who removes all enemies and heroes.This verse is the main meditation (dhyānam) that summarizes the complete form of Pancha Mukha Hanuman, integrating all the attributes previously described – his five faces, fifteen eyes, ten arms holding various weapons and objects, his divine ornaments, and his power to vanquish all foes.

Om, to Anjana’s son, to the son of Wind, of great strength, remover of Sita’s grief, recipient of Sri Ramachandra’s grace-sandals, of great powerful subjugation, lord of the universe, fulfiller of desires, to the five-faced heroic Hanuman, Svaha. For the elimination of ghosts, spirits, goblins, Brahma-demons, female spirits, witches, atmospheric afflictions, and opposing devices and controls, Svaha. For the accomplishment of all purposes, to the five-faced heroic Hanuman, for the gracious blessing of Sri Ramachandra, JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM, Svaha.A person who recites this armor (kavacham) should then recite the great armor. Reciting this hymn even once removes all enemies. (Verse 15)

द्विवारं तु पठेन्नित्यं पुत्रपौत्रप्रवर्धनम् ।
त्रिवारं च पठेन्नित्यं सर्वसम्पत्करं शुभम् ॥ १६॥
dvivāraṃ tu paṭhennityaṃ putrapautrapravardhanam .
trivāraṃ ca paṭhennityaṃ sarvasampatkaraṃ śubham .. 16..
If recited twice daily, it increases sons and grandsons (i.e., brings prosperity to descendants). If recited three times daily, it brings about all kinds of auspicious wealth and good fortune.

चतुर्वारं पठेन्नित्यं सर्वरोगनिवारणम् ।
पञ्चवारं पठेन्नित्यं सर्वलोकवशङ्करम् ॥ १७॥
caturvāraṃ paṭhennityaṃ sarvaroganivāraṇam .
pañcavāraṃ paṭhennityaṃ sarvalokavaśaṅkaram .. 17..
If recited four times daily, it removes all diseases. If recited five times daily, it brings all people under one’s control.

षड्वारं च पठेन्नित्यं सर्वदेववशङ्करम् ।
सप्तवारं पठेन्नित्यं सर्वसौभाग्यदायकम् ॥ १८॥
ṣaḍvāraṃ ca paṭhennityaṃ sarvadevavaśaṅkaram .
saptavāraṃ paṭhennityaṃ sarvasaubhāgyadāyakam .. 18..
If recited six times daily, it brings even all the gods under one’s control. If recited seven times daily, it bestows all good fortune.

अष्टवारं पठेन्नित्यमिष्टकामार्थसिद्धिदम् ।
नववारं पठेन्नित्यं राजभोगमवाप्नुयात् ॥ १९॥
aṣṭavāraṃ paṭhennityamiṣṭakāmārthasiddhidam .
navavāraṃ paṭhennityaṃ rājabhogamavāpnuyāt .. 19..
If recited eight times daily, it fulfills desired goals and wishes. If recited nine times daily, one attains royal pleasures and enjoyments.

दशवारं पठेन्नित्यं त्रैलोक्यज्ञानदर्शनम् ।
रुद्रावृत्तिं पठेन्नित्यं सर्वसिद्धिर्भवेद्ध्रुवम् ॥ २०॥
daśavāraṃ paṭhennityaṃ trailokyajñānadarśanam .
rudrāvṛttiṃ paṭhennityaṃ sarvasiddhirbhaveddhruvam .. 20..
If recited ten times daily, it brings the vision and knowledge of the three worlds. If recited eleven times daily (Rudra’s repetition), one will certainly attain all supernatural powers.

निर्बलो रोगयुक्तश्च महाव्याध्यादिपीडितः ।
कवचस्मरणेनैव महाबलमवाप्नुयात् ॥ २१॥
nirbalo rogayuktaśca mahāvyādhyādipīḍitaḥ .
kavacasmaraṇenaiva mahābalamavāpnuyāt .. 21..
Even one who is weak, afflicted with disease, or suffering from great illnesses, by merely remembering this armor (kavacham), will attain great strength.
