Sri Rudram Namakam – With Meaning – Introduction

Sri Rudram, also known as Rudraprasna, is a sacred hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, chanted from the Yajur Veda. It is one of the most ancient and powerful hymns in Hinduism, invoking the fierce yet benevolent aspect of Lord Shiva, known as Rudra.

The Sri Rudram consists of two parts:
Namakam (verses with “Namah” – salutation)
Chamakam (verses requesting divine blessings, with “Cha Me” – and to me)
Together, these sections form a complete prayer. The Namakam expresses humility and surrender by repeatedly offering salutations to Rudra, acknowledging his presence in all things—living, non-living, auspicious, and terrifying. Chamakam follows with requests for both material and spiritual wealth, emphasizing the need for a balanced life.

The Namakam portion of the Sri Rudram, is found in the Krishna Yajurveda, specifically within the Taittiriya Samhita (Book 4, Chapter 5). The term Namakam is derived from the frequent repetition of the word “namaḥ,” meaning “salutation” or “obeisance.” The Namakam consists of eleven anuvakas (sections), each addressing different aspects of Lord Rudra, who is venerated as a form of Shiva in his fierce, yet deeply compassionate, aspect.

श्री गुरुभ्यॊ नमः । हरिः ऒ३म् ।
ऒं गणानां त्वा गणपतिꣳ हवामहॆ कविं कवीनामुपमश्रवस्तमम् ।

Translation: Now begins the Śrī Rudra Praśna.

atha: Now, or hereafter (indicating the beginning of something important).
śrīrudrapraśnaḥ: The Śrī Rudra Praśna (the recitation of the hymns dedicated to Rudra).

śrī gurubhyo namaḥ
Translation: Salutations to the revered Gurus.

oṃ gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapatigͫ havāmahe
Translation: “Om, we invoke you, O Lord of the Ganas (attendants of Shiva).”
gaṇānāṃ: Of the Ganas (the divine attendants of Lord Shiva).
tvā: You (referring to Ganesha).
gaṇapatim: The Lord of the Ganas (Ganesha).
havāmahe: We invoke, or we call upon.

kaviṃ kavīnāmupamaśravastamam

jyeṣṭharājaṃ: The eldest or foremost king.

Translation: Oṃ, salutations to the blessed one, Rudra.

oṃ: The sacred sound, representing the essence of the universe.
namo: Salutations or bowing down.
bhagavate: To the blessed one, or the one endowed with divine qualities (referring to Rudra in this case).
rudrāya: To Rudra, the fierce and powerful form of Shiva.

This verse is a salutation to Rudra, the fierce and destructive aspect of Shiva, who is also seen as a protector and healer. The invocation of Oṃ at the beginning sanctifies the prayer, and the term Bhagavate refers to the revered and blessed one, highlighting Rudra’s divine qualities. Let your arrow be most auspicious and your bow peaceful. With that most peaceful arrow of yours, O Rudra, make us happy.

yāta iṣuḥ śivatamā śivaṃ babhūva te dhanuḥ
Translation: May your arrow be most auspicious, and may your bow be a source of peace.

That auspicious and benevolent form of yours, O Rudra, which destroys sins— with that peaceful form, O Giriśa, make yourself known to us.

yā te rudra śivā tanūraghorā’pāpakāśinī
Translation: O Rudra, may your auspicious body, which destroys sins and wards off evil, be with us.

यामिषु॑-ङ्गिरिशन्त॒ हस्ते॒ बिभ॒र्​ष्यस्त॑वे ।
शि॒वा-ङ्गि॑रित्र॒ ता-ङ्कु॑रु॒ मा हिग्ं॑सीः॒ पुरु॑ष॒-ञ्जग॑त्॥
yāmiṣu̍-ṅgiriśanta̠ hastē̠ bibha̠r​ṣyasta̍vē ।
śi̠vā-ṅgi̍ritra̠ tā-ṅku̍ru̠ mā hig̍ṃsī̠ḥ puru̍ṣa̠-ñjaga̍t॥
That arrow you hold in your hand, O Giriśa, make it peaceful. Do not harm the world or its people.

yāmiṣuṃ giriśaṃta haste bibharṣyastave
Translation: O Lord of the mountains, the arrow you carry in your hand.

We invoke you, O Giriśa, with auspicious words so that the whole world may be free from disease and suffering.

śivena vacasā tvā giriśācchā vadāmasi
Translation: By auspicious words, we speak to you, O Lord of the mountains (Giriśa).

yathā naḥ sarvamijjagadayakṣmasumanā asat

अहीग्॑श्च॒ सर्वा᳚ञ्ज॒म्भय॒न्-थ्सर्वा᳚श्च यातुधा॒न्यः॑ ॥

The first divine healer said, “May Rudra remove all the serpents and other harmful beings.”

adhyavocadadhi vaktā prathamo daivyo bhiṣak
Translation: The divine healer, the first physician of the gods, has spoken.

The one who is copper-red, reddish-brown, and auburn-hued, very auspicious, and the Rudras that are spread in all directions, may they remove the harm from us.

asau yastāmro aruṇa uta babhruḥ sumaṃgalaḥ
Translation: That (form of Rudra) which is copper-colored, reddish, and brown, and is most auspicious.

उ॒तैनं॒-विँश्वा॑ भू॒तानि॒ स दृ॒ष्टो मृ॑डयाति नः ॥
a̠sau yō̍-‘va̠sarpa̍ti̠ nīla̍grīvō̠ vilō̍hitaḥ ।
u̠taina̍-ṅgō̠pā a̍dṛśa̠nnadṛ̍śannudahā̠rya̍ḥ ।
u̠taina̠ṃ viśvā̍ bhū̠tāni̠ sa dṛ̠ṣṭō mṛ̍ḍayāti naḥ ॥
The blue-throated, red-hued one moves through the world. He is seen by the cowherds and all beings. When seen, he brings protection to us.

asau yo’vasarpati nīlagrīvo vilohitaḥ
Translation: That one (Rudra) who descends with a blue neck and a red body.

Translation: Salutations to the blue-necked one, the thousand-eyed one, the bestower of blessings.

Release the string of your bow from both ends, O Lord, and may the arrows in your hand be far away from us, O Lord.

Translation: Release the bowstring from both ends of your bow.

ni̠śīrya̍ śa̠lyānā̠-mmukhā̍ śi̠vō na̍-ssu̠manā̍ bhava ॥
O thousand-eyed Lord, lower your bow and keep its arrows away from us. Be peaceful and kind to us.

avatatya dhanustva sahasrākṣa śateṣudhe
Translation: Lower your bow, O thousand-eyed one, with a hundred arrows.

niśīrya śalyānāṃ mukhā śivo naḥ sumanā bhava

विज्य॒-न्धनुः॑ कप॒र्दिनो॒ विश॑ल्यो॒ बाण॑वाग्ं उ॒त ।
अने॑शन्न॒स्येष॑व आ॒भुर॑स्य निष॒ङ्गथिः॑ ॥
vijya̠-ndhanu̍ḥ kapa̠rdinō̠ viśa̍lyō̠ bāṇa̍vāgṃ u̠ta ।
anē̍śanna̠syēṣa̍va ā̠bhura̍sya niṣa̠ṅgathi̍ḥ ॥
The unstrung bow of Kapardin (one with matted hair), with arrows removed, is kept aside. The quiver is also set aside for the protection of the world.

vijyaṃ dhanuḥ kapardino viśalyo bāṇavā uta
Translation: O Kapardin (Shiva with matted hair), keep your bow unstrung and without arrows.

This verse is a powerful invocation to Lord Shiva, calling him by many of his divine names and forms. It begins by addressing him as Viśveśvara (the lord of the universe) and Mahadeva (the great god), and continues to praise his other aspects, including Tryambaka (the three-eyed one), Tripurāntaka (the destroyer of the demon Tripura), and Kālāgnirudra (the fire that consumes time). Shiva is also praised as Nīlakaṇṭha (the blue-throated one, who saved the world by swallowing poison), and as Mṛtyuṃjaya (the conqueror of death). Finally, the verse addresses him as Sarveśvara (the lord of all beings) and Sadāśiva (the ever-auspicious one), concluding with an offering of salutations to Śrīman Mahādeva (the glorious great god).

Translation: O remover of afflictions, lord of food, blue-throated one, and red-hued one.

Translation: Do not harm our elders, do not harm our children, do not harm our cattle, do not harm our cows.

stuhi śrutaṃ gartasadaṃ yuvānaṃ mṛganna bhīmamupahatnumugram
Translation: Praise the renowned one, who sits in the cave, who is youthful and terrifying like a wild beast, who strikes down fiercely.

O Rudra, you have thousands of weapons in your arms. O lord, make them face away from us and protect us.

In this vast ocean of space, Rudra dwells. His blue throat and white neck shine. He moves across the earth, fierce and mighty.

Translation: In this great ocean, in the atmosphere, you dwell.

Salutations to the Rudras, lords of beings, with matted hair and sharp arrows. They enter into food and drink, partaking along with all beings. Salutations to the Rudras who protect the paths and roads, who roam the sacred places, carrying swords and arrows. Rudras are spread in all directions, countless in number. To these Rudras, we offer salutations, asking them to lay down their bows at a distance of a thousand leagues. Salutations to the Rudras who are on the earth, in the atmosphere, and in the heavens, whose arrows are the winds and the rain. We offer salutations in all directions—east, south, west, north, and upward. May they protect us and grant us happiness. We place those whom we dislike and those who dislike us in your jaws, O Rudra.

ye bhūtānāmadhipatayo viśikhāsaḥ kapardinaḥ
Translation: Those who are the lords of beings, armed with arrows, with matted hair.

We worship the three-eyed lord (Tryambaka), fragrant and nourishing, who increases our vitality. Like a cucumber detaches from its vine, may we be freed from the bonds of death, but not from immortality.

Translation: We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant, and increasing nourishment.

To the Rudra who is in fire, who is in water, and who is in plants, who has entered into all the worlds—salutations to that Rudra. Praise that Rudra, who wields a strong bow and cures all ailments in the world. We worship Rudra with our salutations, the divine one, the lord of all beings, seeking his favor. This hand of mine is divine. It is the most divine. This hand of mine is the healer of the world, and it brings blessings when it touches. O death, you have thousands and tens of thousands of nooses to slay mortal beings. We disarm all those nooses by the power of sacrifice. Svāhā to death, Svāhā to death!

Translation: That Rudra who is in the fire, in the waters, and in the plants.

The word “Oṃ” is a primordial sound and a sacred syllable in Hinduism that signifies the essence of the ultimate reality or consciousness (Brahman). It is a universal symbol that represents the beginning of creation, sustenance, and dissolution.

“Śāntiḥ” means “peace.” Repeating the word “śāntiḥ” three times has a profound significance in Vedic prayers and rituals. The repetition is intended to invoke peace on three levels:

Ādhyātmika Śāntiḥ (Personal peace): This refers to peace within oneself. It is a prayer to remove internal disturbances such as mental stress, emotional turmoil, and physical discomfort.
Ādhibhautika Śāntiḥ (Environmental peace): This refers to peace from external factors or disturbances caused by other beings or natural forces like accidents, animals, or environmental disasters.
Ādhidaivika Śāntiḥ (Divine peace): This refers to peace from cosmic or supernatural forces, which may include natural calamities or disturbances from divine or otherworldly beings.
By chanting “śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ,” one prays for complete harmony and peace across all dimensions of existence: internally, externally, and universally.

Sri Rudram – Namakam

The Namakam portion of the Sri Rudram, also known as the Rudra Prashna, is a profound and intricate Vedic hymn found in the Krishna Yajurveda, specifically within the Taittiriya Samhita (Book 4, Chapter 5). The term Namakam is derived from the frequent repetition of the word “namaḥ,” meaning “salutation” or “obeisance,” which is a recurring element throughout the hymn. The Namakam consists of eleven anuvakas (sections), each addressing different aspects of Lord Rudra, who is venerated as a form of Shiva in his fierce, yet deeply compassionate, aspect.

Namakam comes from the Sanskrit root word “Namah” (नमः), meaning “salutations” or “I bow.” The Namakam section is characterized by its repeated use of “Namah” or “Namo” as it offers salutations to Lord Rudra (Shiva)

The hymn offers a multitude of salutations to Rudra in his various forms—recognizing him not only as the god of destruction but also as a healer, protector, and the one who sustains life. Each section addresses Rudra’s presence in all layers of existence, acknowledging his omnipresence in nature, inanimate objects, animals, humans, and even in unseen forces like the wind and rain.
